After spending a few days in and around Bialowieza - where we met Frank from Germany, who is on a longer cycling trip through Poland and Lithuania, and who kindly invited us to his place when we come through the North of Germany - we continued direction North still exploring the National Park. The route took us to Narewka, Siemianowka, Suprasl, and from there we cut through directly to the northern part of the the Biebrza National Park (skipping Bialystok, which would have been one of the stops on the GreenVelo route). After entering the Biebrza National Park at Dolistowo, we decided to stay on the camp site in Kopytkowo, a tiny village, one of those where "the worlds ends". We still did an adventurous swamp walk the same evening into the heart of the park which took us hours (!) for a 3 km path to get there and back, as we sank into the mud sometimes almost up to our knees. Fortunately we managed to get back before dark, despite of Heidi's worries that she would not be able to "walk" this quite exhausting stretch back...
We continued the next day roughly along the Augustow canal to Augustow - a nice relaxed town with beautiful lakes around it and loads of opportunities for leasure activities. From there we followed the GreenVelo again along the Augustow Canal to Suwalki. Since we had arranged an appointment for Riga in the meantime we decided to take the train from Suwalki to Kaunas. Entering the modern train with our tandem was a) allowed and b) easy :) The train operates as a direct connection from Bialystok to Kaunas and runs only three days a week (Friday - Sunday). It is an excellent option for those cyclists who need to speed up on their route (or want to skip a stretch because of bad weather).
