Visiting the Merja Zerga Lagoon
This impressive huge shallow tidal lagoon is said to host more than 100 bird species. It is a Ramsar Convention site and a key area for migratory birds on the East Atlantic flyway. We had a very interesting guided boat tour with Khalil who knows a lot lot about the many birds and who explained also that the habitat is threatened. Cormorans are becoming too numerous, and there is more and more sand in the lagoon - instead of mud which provides much more feed for the birds. We saw oysterfishers, caspian terns, herrons, avocets, plovers, a fish eagle, flamingos (flying) and many more.
We stayed in Khalil's simple guesthouse right at the lagoon where we saw marsh owls flying out in the evening from his terrace.
