Selinunte - Agrigento - Gela: first encounters with Magna Grecia

Posted 23/1/2019

As Segesta is rather high up in the mountains we had skipped it so that Selinunte was our first encounter with an Ancient Greek City or rather its remains.

Unfortunately there was a film team organizing a party or show and occupying the Museum so we could not see the exhibits but the remaining temples, some of them reassembled are quite impressive. We also learned about the system of main (Plataiai) and crossing secondary roads (Stenopoi) in standardized widths employed in practically all the Greek cities in Magna Grecia.

Two days later we had only 20 km left to reach Agrigento, but that proved quite a challenge: when we reached the port area we heard the familiar and slightlzy alarming ploing and found one of our new spokes had broken, so we searched for a gas station (for air for the tire - some people find it very funy if your approach a gas station with a bike and make jokes about bikes not needing fuel...) the third one or rather a tire selling place had a pump, then we trusted maps me to get us to the centre, unfortunately the suggested way was a mud paths and the alternative led us into Agrigento at practically its highest point, I was totally exhausted  fed up by the time we finally reached "baby luna", our appartment at almost 4 o clock (not even 3 km and over 200 m altitude in 2 hours).

In Agrigento we could see most of the archeological park, which conveniently is open until 20:00, and the lady at the ticketing office did not understand my worries that the sun would go down in less than an hour... Most of the temple remains are lit, not all of the paths between them, and with the help of the cell phone torch we managed to decipher most of the info tables (at least the ones we found). On the next day we visited the museum, with an overwhelming collection of Greek vases, and started to get a bit more context around all the stones we had seen...

We learnt that public libraries in Sicily do not provide access to internet and that all the internet cafes in Agrigento had closed down...

In Gela museum and archeological park were both closed and under renovation so we decided to try our luck with the Sicilian trains again and go up to the mountains for a change... to see world heritage Val di Noto Cities: Ragusa, Modica and Scicli
