I cycled - still 1on1.bike - roughly following the Greenvelo cycle path from Krastynaw via Chelm, Wlodawa, to Biala Podlaska. A sign on the central square in Krastynaw informed me about the distance to the European capital....and somewhere near Chelm (51.13 N) I crossed our home latitude Brussels-Leipzig (50.85 and 51.34 N, respectively). Waving at you guys, friends and family in Germany and Belgium! I guess on our way from Istanbul to Kirkenes we will never be so close again ;-)
The Greenvelo route has excellent signposting (I had to smile when I saw a sign warning me of a small 3% (sic!) ascent), comfortable rest areas in mostly beautiful surroundings. Sometimes it goes on a dedicated cycle path along roads, sometimes it goes on secondary/tertiary paved roads . The only problem is that the surface is at times unpaved and too soft to ride on with our tandem (the small front wheel ploughs then into the sandy ground or the gravel). But that was really not a serious issue as there are so many calm and good alternative roads in Eastern Poland. The greenvelo route meanders almost 2000 km through Polish border regions (clockwise with Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Slovakia, linking I assume literally all sites worth seeing in the area. Since the wheather was nice I met many fellow cyclists.
Since we had since long the first weekend of May blocked for an important family event in the Spreewald South of Berlin I left the tandem in Biala Podlaska to take the train to Germany. The bike parking space at the train station looked very unsafe so I found a second hand car stand where they promised to take care of it.
