Back in Germany

Posted 8/9/2019

After a very nice chat with two Danish police officers on ‘paid leave’ at the border crossing we enter Germany and visit the Emil Nolde house in Seebüll…

Reintroducing border controls in an officially united and borderfree Europe, here by Sweden, leads to the unconventional arrangement that now Danish police officers from all over the country take turns to occasionally check the cars crossing the border. They are very interested to learn about our trip (and unpaid leave).

After 2 km we reach the house of and Museum about Emil Nolde, whose paintings have always fascinated us although learning more details about his personality leaves at least me with some reservations. But the pictures speak very directly and for themselves and being in the landscape, seeing his flower garden makes his motives very tangible.

We take the ferry to Föhr, to meet Andreas family, both his mother and her husband as well as his sister with family are on holiday here – we are very happy to see them again and have a wonderful time sharing our experiences. Andreas daughter arrives the next day, so I continue by train, luckily Jenny a friend and former colleague has just bought a holiday house 85 km further south, so I spend two days admiring an almost equally impressive rose garden, access to a computer and very nice conversations, which help a lot to ease the transition back to normal life….

Another weekend with family

My daughters Didima and Lina, as well as Maria´s partner Alex meet us to spend the weekend. Neither Lina, who is still jet-lagged after returning from Singapore a couple of days ago nor Alex felt like cycling, so we spend the weekend in Glückstadt, city of luck. At least with the campsite, Fährhaus Hodorf, we are extremely lucky.   Klaus and Astrid (the owners) made us feel very comfortable and are kind and helpful in every imaginable way. We have lots of fun collecting apples and plums from the lovely fruit orchard and childhood memories are awakened by jointly baking fruit cake and cinnamon buns. Maria tries out the tandem for the first time and in spite of being a bit nervous enjoys it very much.
